How to Start a Self-Service Florist Vending Business
A florist can investigate selling bouquets from an unstaffed point or offering pre-ordered flower collection after closing. A new entrepreneur can explore a similar model with a flower supplier. Both need genuine local demand, suitable storage and people caring for the flowers.

Flower vending and pre-order collection are different
In a vending model, the customer chooses from available stock and completes a purchase before the assigned compartment opens. In a pre-order model, the florist prepares a named order and the customer receives an authorised collection instruction.
Confirm that the chosen hardware, inventory, checkout and LockerLauncher setup support your intended journey. Standard pickup configuration is not proof of a ready-made flower vending product. Compare an existing flower vending machine with a suitable locker-based setup.
Choose a location customers actually use
Investigate residential buildings first, then suitable retail, transport-adjacent, hospital-area or workplace sites with the owner’s permission. High footfall is a starting hypothesis, not a sales forecast. Ask who buys flowers, why, when and where they currently shop.
Check visibility, access, loading, power, connectivity, weather exposure and the security of customers at night. Offer 24/7 collection only where the actual site allows safe access around the clock; state staffed support hours separately.
Freshness is part of the service, not an optional extra
Specify compartment size for the largest bouquet, safe handling, packaging and appropriate temperature and ventilation. Ask a floristry specialist and equipment supplier what each product requires. Refrigeration, monitoring or protected indoor placement may be necessary.
Plan stock rotation, collection deadlines, daily quality checks and what happens to unsold or damaged flowers. A cabinet with electronic locks cannot prevent wilting or guarantee shelf life.
An unstaffed counter is not a zero-labour business
People still source flowers, prepare arrangements, restock, clean, inspect quality and resolve failed access, refunds and maintenance. A supplier can perform some tasks under contract, but those costs remain in the business.
For an existing florist, compare time spent on manual handovers with new loading, support and stock-check tasks. Do not promise that automation removes staff costs or increases revenue.
Build a budget that includes unsold stock
Use your own quotes for flowers, preparation, packaging, transport, hardware, installation, software, site fees, utilities, payment processing, maintenance and insurance. Estimate spoilage from a pilot rather than an assumed industry percentage.
Contribution per sold bouquet is the selling price minus its direct costs. Also account for unsold stock and fixed costs before calling the result profit. LockerLauncher software starts from $100 per month; this is not the complete florist startup or operating cost.
Test one point before building a network
Trial pre-orders or a staffed partner collection point with a limited range. Track actual purchases, repeat customers, collection times, spoilage, support and restocking time. A seasonal rush does not prove year-round demand.
If the pilot supports self-service investment, agree the supplier, host, product-care process and customer terms before ordering. Keep an accessible alternative and a failure-response plan. Grow only when the service and full economics work.
Perguntas frequentes
- Can I sell flowers 24/7 without staff at the counter?
- Potentially, where site access and suitable equipment allow it. Preparation, stock care, restocking and support still require people.
- Do flower vending lockers need refrigeration?
- Requirements depend on the flowers, climate, holding time and equipment. Obtain specialist storage advice; do not assume a normal locker is suitable.
- Will busy footfall guarantee sales?
- No. Check purchase intent and actual sales, plus spoilage and all costs, at the proposed site.
