How do locker businesses make money?
Locker businesses make money by charging customers per use, through subscriptions or rental fees, by taking commission from service partners, or through contracts with businesses and site owners. What matters is what remains after partner, site, software, transport and maintenance costs.
Five ways to charge
Most operators use one main model and sometimes add a second.
| Model | Who pays | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Per-use charge | Customer | A fee each time luggage is stored |
| Subscription | Customer | Monthly laundry plan |
| Rental fee | Customer | Hourly or daily equipment hire |
| Partner commission | Service partner | A share of each repair booked through the lockers |
| Business contract | Host or business | A monthly fee to run key handover for a garage |
Revenue is not profit
Revenue − partner/service costs − site costs − software − transport − maintenance − other operating costs = operating surplus before tax and any excluded owner pay or finance costs.
Every line depends on your service, site and partners. Use real quotes for each, and treat any result as an estimate, not a forecast.
Common questions
- How many transactions would cover the costs?
- Divide your fixed monthly costs by what each transaction contributes after its direct costs. Use your own quotes for both numbers.
- Is a locker business passive income?
- No. Someone still collects, restocks, services and supports. Software can automate bookings and access, but not the physical work.
- Which model gives recurring income?
- Subscriptions and business contracts are the most predictable, because they do not depend on each individual visit.
- Should the host get a share?
- Often a host expects a fee, a revenue share or a clear benefit to its users. Agree this before installation.
